It is reasonable to predict a lot of staycations this summer. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position to spend a little money on your backyard, then it's time to make it into the ultimate summer oasis! Here are a few tips to get you going.
Upgrade your shaded area
Instead of buying new umbrellas (they hardly do the trick in the sweltering DC-heat), install a pergola. You can either use a pre-fabricated one from Amazon or you can have a handyman custom build one for you. There are so many options out there for material, too: steel, wood or composite to name a few. A sun-shade sail canopy from amazon or a retractable awning can also do the trick.
Re-think your lounge/patio furniture
This option is great for lazy summer nights, when comfort and style is a must. It is crucial that, while choosing furniture, you make sure they match the scale of the space. If the furniture is too small and doesn't fill the space, it will look as awkward as over- sized furniture for a small space.
Zone the spaces
It's important to plan out the outdoor space and how you will use it. You can easily create an outdoor dining room by adding an outdoor rug to anchor the table, and a few tall planters to divide the space and create sections. Look to where you have shade, where you would like to relax with a book, or where you would like to sunbathe for an optimal location. A stainless steel kitchen island can easily be used as an outdoor kitchen if the budget doesn't allow for a custom built one.
Backyard movie night
Buying a projector would be a great investment this summer. They come in all price categories, and with an Amazon Fire Stick or Google Chrome Cast, you are all set. A white wall or a white sheet will do, but you can always shop around for outdoor screen options. Invite a few friends and enjoy the night!
Lighting
Add more light to your backyard with solar, hard-wired, light strings. Do your research and buy something you like, most of good quality will last for many, many years.
Screened-in-porch
If you happen to be bothered by mosquitos, enclose your patio now. This will allow for a great hangout spot that straddles the line perfectly between outdoors and indoors. Or, hire a professional to help you reduce the bug count through insecticides to make outdoor relaxing enjoyable.
Water features
Time to install that pool you long have been thinking about. Or perhaps a hot tub? There are many options out there: from in-ground pools to above-ground to a stock tank that can be made into your own little pool. There are even ways to make natural pools with their own eco-systems. If this is too much to tackle, a slip and slide, inflatable pools or an outdoor shower from Amazon can also be fun, refreshing and practical.
Lawn games
Your own lawn can be converted into a mini-Olympic stadium with the purchase of a few fun lawn games. Divide up into teams, and let the competition begin!
The Danish word "hygge," which means "cozy," has become so popular to use and is a key element to your backyard transformation. Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it and get the whole family involved in the decision making process.
