If you are a resident in Montgomery County and parts of Prince George's Counties, you may have noticed a slight brownish/yellowish tint in the water for several weeks now.
Yesterday, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission- WSSC reassured its customers that its tap water, despite a distinct brown hue, is safe to drink, though officials are apologizing and recognizing that the discoloration is “unacceptable.” WSSC issued a statement yesterday acknowledging that they are aware of the increase in discolored water complaints coming from customers in Montgomery and Prince George's counties served by the Potomac Water Filtration Plant. WSSC performs more than 100 water quality tests every day, and all current test results indicate that the water is safe.
Please read this press release for more information.
If you are experiencing discolored water, please call WSSC at 301-206-4002, or email them at emergencycallcenter@wsscwater.com, so they can better track this issue.
WSSC does not recommend using discolored water to do laundry. If clothing gets stained, immediately wash the clothes again using a rust remover product. This type of product is available in most supermarkets or you can contact WSSC at 301-206-4002 or email them at communications@wsscwater.com and request a stain remover.
GM/CEO Carla Reid is joined by WSSC and County water and health officials at the Potomac Water Filtration Plant for a briefing on the cause of discolored water.
