While we all hope to avoid them, power outages can happen — especially during severe weather. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping your home and family safe and comfortable when the lights go out.
Stay Informed
The best way to stay ahead of a storm is to know when it’s coming. Sign up for text, email, or voice alerts from Delmarva Power, or download their mobile app on the App Store or Google Play. Real-time updates will help you plan and respond quickly if power interruptions occur.
Plan Ahead for an Outage
Keep an eye on weather forecasts and take time to prepare before the storm hits. If you lose power, always use flashlights rather than candles or kerosene lamps, which can create fire hazards.
Develop a family emergency plan that outlines what to do if you need to leave your home temporarily. Be sure to include arrangements for family members with special needs, including seniors, infants, or anyone who relies on electric-powered medical equipment.
If you use medical devices that require electricity, make backup arrangements in advance — whether that’s a portable generator, battery system, or staying with a friend or relative who has power.
What to Have on Hand
Having essential supplies ready can make all the difference. Keep these items stocked and easily accessible:
-
Flashlights (not candles)
-
Fresh batteries
-
Battery-operated clock radio
-
Fully charged cell phone and laptop/tablet
-
Non-perishable foods and pet food
-
Water: at least one gallon per person, per day. If your home relies on well water, fill a bathtub with water for sanitation and manual toilet flushing.
-
Blankets and warm clothing
-
Prescription medications and refills
-
Cash, in case ATMs or card readers aren’t working
-
A full tank of gas or a fully charged electric vehicle
-
First-aid kits for both your home and car
-
A list of emergency phone numbers, including 1-800-898-8042 to report outages
